
Susan Honea joined MDE School in 2020 and currently serves as the Director of Finance. She manages all finance-related activities for the school, including invoicing, scholarship and state funding coordination, and grant requests. In addition, Susan supports human resources processes and partners closely with Executive Director Mindy Elkan on strategic initiatives, such as school expansion and hiring.
Susan brings extensive nonprofit support experience to MDE, along with a strong background in business operations. She is co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of SMC Innovations LLC, an accounting firm she operates with her husband, Matt. She also leads two other ventures: Susan Honea Coaching & Consulting, where she provides executive coaching, accelerated leadership development coaching, and other consulting services, and Tip of the Writeberg, a professional writing and editing company that offers developmental editing, copyediting, indexing, and writing coaching. She also leads the Atlanta chapter of eWomenNetwork, where she serves as Managing Director.
Susan holds a BA in English and an MA in Professional Writing from Kennesaw State University, a BS in Health Science and a Master of Public Health from Kaplan University (Purdue Global), and an MS in Positive Psychology from Life University. She is currently completing her EdD in Educational Leadership at National University.
Susan and Matt’s daughter, Caroline, is currently a sophomore at the University of Georgia. Outside of work, Susan enjoys reading (she’s on track to read more than 75 books this year) and volunteering with organizations that serve children, animals, and the arts.
